Intention-Action Gap

Getting from here to there!
Getting from here to there!

At our WW (Weight Watchers) meeting this past week we focused on what might be getting in the way between setting one's goal and achieving it. Looking at 'we are here' and 'we want to get there' exploring all the steps along the way. Sort of like all the steps across that bridge. We talked about our intentions and that gap between intentions and following through.

What is in gap? One of the things that may be in the gap is our lack of preparation. When we are not prepared it can get in the way of our follow-through. Then there are unexpected barriers. Once of the things that I find challenging is my health. It sometimes gets in the way of the goal I may have set for myself. Then there is the buying into the thought that 'I don't feel like doing this'. In my long history of setting SMART goals, I noticed what may be in the gap is not having a goal that I connect with my values. When this happens, I forget I even set the goal. Hard to reach a specific goal when I don't remember having set it in the first place.

Goal setting is one of my superpowers. It is a learned skill. I love setting them and meeting them. There are times when setting a goal and meeting that goal is not so straight forward. I have learned to be flexible. Adjusting to making the steps smaller and pivoting.

To read further on setting SMART goals, go to my blog post-dated February 2, 2023. WW uses STAR goals. Specific, Timely, Action-oriented, and Realistic. They are like SMART goals. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.

I have lots of goals set for myself as we go into the summer. I am working on all the steps that will have me celebrating in three months. One of the ways we framed goals this week was looking at where we would like to be on our journey by July 1st. I am looking forward to lying on my hammock, where my lawn is all mowed and celebrating all my accomplishments over the next three months.

Do you have any long-term goals that you are breaking into short term doable goals? I hope so. I also hope you celebrate them and more importantly celebrate you!
